Picking the Perfect Blend - The Morning Cup

Picking the Perfect Blend - The Morning Cup

Coffee blending is an art form that allows for the creation of unique flavors by combining different beans. In this blog post, we explore the individual characteristics of Ethiopian Washed Yirgacheffe and Brazilian Serra Negra, and why they make for an exceptional harmonious blend when combined in equal parts.

When our founder, Chris, set off on his journey to create the perfect cup of coffee, he spent months roasting hundreds of samples from around the world to find the beans that would become our flagship blend, The Morning Cup. The blend of a flagship coffee, in his mind, had to not only be perfect for him, but also appeal to the masses who just wanted a fresh, hot cup of joe to get going in the morning. He didn't want to roast a specialty coffee that required a perfectly heated and timed pour over brewing method taking time from getting the family ready and getting out the door. But, he also didn't want the average rot-on-the-grocery-store-shelf generic medium roast. He set out to create the most memorable regular cup of plain coffee out there. Let's dive into the world of coffee blending and discover the magic that unfolds when these two distinct origins come together to make The Morning Cup.

Contrasting Origins and Flavors
Ethiopian Washed Yirgacheffe:

  • Originating from the high-altitude farms of Ethiopia's Yirgacheffe region, this coffee boasts bright acidity, floral notes, and a distinct fruity profile. Think bergamot, jasmine, citrus, and berries. Its delicate body and pronounced sweetness make it a favorite amongst discerning coffee enthusiasts.

Brazilian Serra Negra:

  • Hailing from the vast coffee plantations of Brazil's Minas Gerais region, Serra Negra offers a contrasting flavor profile. It boasts a full-bodied richness, low acidity, and indulgent chocolatey undertones. Notes of caramel, cocoa, and toasted nuts create a smooth and satisfying experience.

The Power of Blending
When these two single-origin coffees come together in equal parts, the result is a harmonious blend that plays on the strengths of each coffee's individual characteristics. The contrasting flavors and profiles fuse together to create a multifaceted cup with a balanced complexity that is greater than the sum of its parts.

Flavor Notes of the Blend
By blending Ethiopian Washed Yirgacheffe and Brazilian Serra Negra in equal parts, you can expect a well-rounded and captivating coffee experience. The blend offers a medium acidity that strikes a delicate balance between the Ethiopian coffee's bright acidity and the Brazilian coffee's low acidity. This creates a pleasant and gentle acidity that does not overpower the taste buds.

The blend also showcases a layered flavor profile. While the Ethiopian component brings a slight floral and fruity note to the forefront, the Brazilian component adds depth and richness with its chocolatey undertones. The result is a sensory journey that starts with floral and sweet citrusy top note, leading into a velvety mid-palate of cocoa and caramel, culminating in a lingering finish of toasted nuts.

Versatility in Brewing
The Ethiopian Washed Yirgacheffe and Brazilian Serra Negra blend lends itself beautifully to various brewing methods, allowing you to enjoy its complexity according to your preferences. Whether you choose to experience it through a classic drip brew, perfectly time a pour-over, indulge in a creamy latte, or savor the flavors of an espresso shot, this blend is versatile and adaptable to multiple brewing techniques.
